Growing up in Japan, the concept of “en” (縁) was ubiquitous and quite natural in all day-to-day dealings, even in business. The concept is based on Eastern philosophy and refers to – in its most simplified explanation – the encounters you have with people and things. But there is an important nuance that these encounters are somewhat led by fate or supported by some external force. This should encourage one to cherish, honor, and cultivate these relationships with care. You will often hear Japanese people thanking each other for the “en” that brought them together. As I transitioned my life to Hawaii, I saw many similar values between the two cultures, especially in the care people invest in one-on-one relationships. I strive to apply this sentiment in my work that I believe is so relationship driven. Our logo symbolizes this outlook as “en” also literally means circle or circular, and our name stems from the idea that the remote islands of Hawaii are connected to the rest of the world by an infinite ocean.
